Amit Sood: Building a museum of museums on the web

amit_sood_building_a_museum_of_museums_on_the_web.html

Amit Sood, a Group Marketing Manager for Google, has created and complete to museum of the century. A site where one can virtually walk through a museum in Paris, while sitting in bed in Thousand Oaks California. The most a exciting aspect of GoogleArtProject is its high resolution viewing of any desired piece; said best by  Julian Raby, director, the Freer Gallery, Washington, DC:

“The giga-pixel experience brings us very close to the essence of the artist through detail that simply can’t be seen in the gallery itself. Far from eliminating the necessity of seeing artworks in person, Art Project deepens our desire to go in search of the real thing.”

The Directions to use the site are EASY, simply select a museum from the homepage and then either choose ‘Explore the museum’ or ‘View Artwork’. Once you are in the main site use the drop-down menus or the side info bar to navigate between artworks and museums.

Life’s Crossroad Installations by Gong Yuebin

KWAN FONG GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION

7:00 PM OCTOBER 6, 2011

Deeply concerned with our natural environment, Gong Yuebin’s extraordinary installations provoke strong feelings of loss or power. Using the blackened trunks of large trees that were burned in forest fires, the artist creates monumental arrangements that are evocative of stone circles or watching figures. CLU is fortunate to have Yuebin’s work on display at the flagpoles beside Soiland Humanities Center and inside the Kwan Fong Gallery through Nov. 15.

See the beauty of Mother Earth disappearing.
Hear the voice of freedom fading.
Witness the spirit of mind suffering.
How much more Natural resource has to be exhausted?
How many more people have to be sacrificed?
How many more souls have to be destroyed?
We are one with all on this planet.

Congratulations Finalist Ashley Bowman

A big congratulations to CLU art major Ashley Bowman for being selected as one of the finalists of the American Batik Design Competition.

The American Batik Design Competition is an open competition intended to draw from among American citizens diverse talents in fabric, graphic art and fashion design, to put on display new and original designs that allow the American spirit and values to shine through, while still recognizing uniqueness in the Batik motif. The phrase “American Batik” is a term attempting to illustrate and describe such creative designs and fashion ideas that remain influenced by typical Indonesian Batik motifs, and are bound to incorporate two criteria:

  1. they have to be designed by American designers; and
  2. they exhibit the American spirit and values, drawing from its history and folklore.

The theme of the competition is “The Spirit of America in the Heritage of Batik”. This theme is hoped to reflect the articulation of cultural fusion between United States and Indonesia through batik; to bring American values in the tradition of Indonesian Batik. This competition is aimed at strengthening people to people contacts between the United States and Indonesia, to bring closer the two countries’ cultural cooperation. It is also one of the Indonesian government’s efforts to internationalize batik to the world.

Judges will consist of Batik and textile experts as well as fashion designers and representatives of fashion industries from Indonesia and the U.S. Participants of this competition will be asked to create an ‘American batik’ digital design only. The transformation from digital designs into Batik Tulis (hand-made batik) will be later done by Indonesian batik artists in Indonesia.

You have made your family, friends, and colleagues very proud. You represent one of the many success stories an education in art at California Lutheran University will bring. All of us at CLU wish you the best of luck for the final.

Congratulations!

Pioneering digital engraving

Barry Burns (Art Faculty), who has pioneered Digital Engraving over the last
ten years, has spent part of this summer helping Andromeda Software develop
new stippling techniques for the Wall Street Journal.

Barry is able to take simple grayscale photos and turn them into digital
engravings -very similar to the actual intaglio process found in classical
engraving.  He has been collaborating with Wall Street Journal artists to
achieve exact computerized versions of the portrait work seen in the
Journal.
If you have ever wondered what CLU President, Chris Kimball, would look like
in the Wall Street Journal, look no further. In this version, we see
President Kimball as he might appear on CLU currency. Don¹t worry, the Art
Department has no plans to create a CLU monetary system!

Aged To Perfection Showing

current-age.jpg  old-lady.jpg

Recently, Computer Graphics students were challenged to create a portrait of themselves as they might appear as eighty-five year olds. Demonstrating their compositing skills in Photoshop and their knowledge of the aging process, they created a series of amazing, aged portraits. Our special guest judge for this challenge was CLU’s Dr. Robert Meadows E.D., Ph.D. Professor of Criminal Justice. Our thanks to Dr, Meadows, who after years of service in law enforcement, brought a trained and experienced eye in determining which student did the most visually convincing portrait of themselves as a senior citizen.

The winning portrait was created by Sophia Naranjo. You can visit the Aged To Perfection Show in the Spies Borman Building right next to Media Services. Try to identify participating students before checking their names on the tags below their pictures. It’s fun!

Earth Day poster winner!

newarborearthhayleyj_1cbf28.jpg

Last Fall, 19 students from the Art 380-01 Computer Graphics  Class took the city –wide challenge to create a poster for the upcoming Earth Arbor Day Event.

The winner was Hayley Joy Woldseth, a CLU junior from Parkland, Washington. Haley will graduate this Spring with a Bachelors degree in Communication (Media Production Emphasis) and Music (Vocal).

The 11th Annual Arbor/Earth Day is a  free community event presented by the City of Thousand Oaks and Conejo Recreation and Park District. The purpose of the event is to promote a healthy, prosperous and sustainable environment by highlighting planet-friendly activities, services and products.

Haley is working toward a career in design, animation, or film production. She says that she absolutely loves to create things.  As a youngster, she would design and assemble furniture and clothing for her play dolls with anything she could find laying around the house. “That’s the mark of a creative personality –one who can find the extraordinary in the ordinary things around them” according to Art Professor Barry Burns. “This is not the first time one of our students has won this annual contest, but I’m especially proud of her effort this year.”

Hayley enjoys challenging her creativity with music, interior décor, graphics, and clothing design. She has an older sister, Katrina, who is a web designer in Syracuse, NY and they hope to own their own design firm. Most of her friends are working toward one career while she is working toward five or six.“That is typically what sets me apart from the people around me.  I want to be, do and experience everything…and have some fun during the process.”
