There’s a terrific video on the Ventura County Star Website profiling CLU Sculpture Professor Bela Bacsi, who joined the Art Department Faculty in Fall of last year.

Bela’s exhibit, Scultura Marmo, a collection of his amazingly detailed marble sculpture and bronze work, is on display in the Kwan Fong Gallery until Friday 18th March.

Mike Adams makes the news

Michael Adams’ current exhibit in the Kwan Fong gallery at CLU attracted the attention of Ventura County Star columnist Nicole D’Amore, inspiring her to write a profile piece about the artist. The exhibit is open until Friday October 8th.

Thousand Oaks Art Festival

The annual Thousand Oaks Art Festival took place this weekend, so we set up a booth to make sure that the art community in the County is more aware of our presence, offering our calendar of events and chatting with interested prospective students and parents.

Opening at Kwan Fong Gallery

On Friday night we opened a new show at the Kwan Fong Gallery. It is a group show of the work of the summer beginning painting students and Lindsey Brittain's work from her Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. The work will be up for at least a week an all are invited to come out and take a look. Lindsey would particularly like you to participate in her research by filling out a short questionnaire on your response to her paintings. This data will be collected and reported at the Undergraduate Research symposium in October.



New Studio

Anyone taking summer school painting or drawing at California Lutheran University probably already noticed that the K-2 painting studio is closed all this week.  The reason for the slight inconvenience is the construction of a new interior wall that will divide the space in half, creating not one, but two separate painting studios inside.
The art department’s goal is for every professor to have their own studio space, giving the program a more atelier-like feel by allowing instructors to work more closely with their students, having the space to lead by example.




Porcelain, Paint and “Exquisite Play”

Janet Neuwalder’s fascinating work is formed using natural and industrial raw materials (branches, leaves, straw, fibers, papers) that act as armatures for clay. The process of coating, dipping, layering and firing acts as an accelerated aging and evolution process that petrifies the form and produces a “contemporary fossil.” When this marriage of process, form and fire unite, the work is encoded with the past and present, and is suggestive of its potential future.
Admission is free.

Parking: Street parking is by permit only Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitor parking is available in the parking lots on Mountclef Boulevard north and south of Olsen Road.



CLU Professors in The Arts Council Exhibit “Symbols and Words”

Works by professors Michael Pearce and Brian Stethem are included in the current exhibit “Symbols and Words” at The Galleria at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts.  Artists use symbols to communicate meaning. Come and check out the symbols and meanings behind them.

Pederson statue

  Paul’s sculpture of Richard Pederson has been completely encased in layers of silicon, fibreglass and hydrocal, in that order, then the mold removed to be bolted together ready for casting. Now we’re waiting for the work to be completed, including arranging time for Paul to return to the University to work on the wax when it’s made. 
Here you can see Raphael applying the final layer of hydrocal and the green coloured fibreglass beneath it.



Residency begins

Paul Lucchesi, the resident sculptor at the Kwan Fong Gallery for this academic year, has arrived at the University and is preparing to begin work. Students and members of the faculty and staff are already enjoying his company and quick wits, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Paul makes for us! It’s a real pleasure to have him visit us.
Come and meet him for the first time this Thursday at the opening reception in the Kwan Fong gallery. Starting at 7.00 pm this will be a thoroughly enjoyable chance to spend a pleasant time with this charming artist.
Remember that Paul’s going to be here for a month, so you can visit repeatedly to watch as his work takes shape. This is a rare opportunity to get behind the scenes of an artist’s personal practice as he gets deep into his creative practice.



New Sculpture Show

Untitled work in progress by Paul Lucchesi

In the spirit of celebrating the 50th anniversary of CLU, we are inviting renowned figurative sculptor Paul Lucchesi to join us from Septmber 17 through October 15.  Luchessi is known for his Italian Renaissance and Baroque style sculptures which have won him awards from the prestigious National Sculpture Society and the National Academy of Design, among others.
Lucchesi will be using the Kwan Fong Gallery as a studio and visitors are free to watch the sculptures created come to life!
In addition, Lucchesi will be leaving one of the completed sculptures with us to be cast in bronze and placed among the campus landscape as part of an ongoing sculture collection.
Admission is free. The Kwan Fong Gallery, located in Soiland Humanities Center, is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, and a closing reception at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
