On view October 31 – December 6, 2008
For the third consecutive year, the Kwan Fong Gallery will be host to the remarkable works of Sean Sobczak, now featuring new wonderings including a spectacular 12-foot-wide octopus.
Sobczak’s second life began late in the summer of 2001, when he attended the Burning Man Art Festival for the first time. Deeply inspired by the boundless creativity he experienced that week, he returned to Los Angeles and began working on his first sculptural creation: a six-foot-tall glowing seahorse which would be the cornerstone of an elaborate 33-foot-long mobile art installation for the next summer’s festival. By the time he completed the project, Sobczak knew he had found his life’s calling in sculpture.
Through a combination of steel wire, imported fabrics, and various types of illumination, the artist uses delicate curves, rich textures and warm colors to infuse his pieces with a gentle, dreamlike, surreal quality that encourages the viewer to rediscover these wonders of nature with a sense of childlike awe.
