Beginning in 1949, Puerto Rico’s División de Educación de la Comunidad (Division of Community Education) or DIVEDCO created films and related posters and reading material for the didactic consumption of the island’s population. Films focused on cultural heritage, health, public safety, democracy, literacy, inclusivity, and civic participation. Films were often screened in the evenings and outdoors, followed by study groups discussing the films and reading material, and promoting community participation and conviviality. This exhibit highlights posters produced from 1949 to 1989 from some of Puerto Rico’s most celebrated graphic artists, including Lorenzo Homar, Rafael Tufiño, Antonio Maldonado, Carlos Raquel Rivera, Eduardo Vera Cortés, Rafael Delgado Castro, and José Meléndez Contreras. All items were generously loaned from the private collections of Drs. Thomas F. Anderson and Marisel C. Moreno.
