In this gathering, artists coming from diverse backgrounds and multiple intersectionalities present works of protest and resistance using one or more printing elements; the inks, the matrixes, the paper, the equipment, or the print. The resulting artwork can range from two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects to time-based videos and performances; from hospital gowns to quilts, from handkerchiefs to cotton; from folded paper to photographs. Each work tells a unique story as varied as the lives of the participating artists. Curated by Sheila Goloborotko, Print + initially showcased at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ. It subsequently journeyed to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, FL, where Goloborotko serves as an Associate Professor in Printmaking at the University of North Florida. Through her masterful manipulation of clay, Neuwalder sculpts interconnected blossoms of shells, evocative topographic cityscapes, delicate porcelain shoes (to name a few), employing remnants of the craft and materials borrowed from the realm of archaeology. She unearths the enduring strength within fragility, delicately constructing forms and ideas that withstand the tests of time. This body of work emanates from a profound personal connection to the subject matter, serving as a poignant tribute to the intricate tapestry woven by Neuwalder’s own family experiences. Reflecting on her mother’s internment in the Japanese-American camp Topaz, in the harsh Utah desert, and her father’s harrowing history of Holocaust displacement, Neuwalder deftly intertwines the threads of history with the resilient essence of the human spirit.

In this exhibition of her latest body of work, retired faculty member Terry Spehar-Fahey introduces audiences to the world of Idaho ranching families of the Pahsimeroi Valley

On view June 28–October 23, 2022. The Kwan Fong Gallery is open by appointment only. Please contact gallery@callutheran.edu or (805) 493-3697 to schedule an appointment.
Artist’s Reception: Saturday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.

In this exhibition of her latest body of work, retired faculty member Terry Spehar-Fahey introduces audiences to the world of Idaho ranching families of the Pahsimeroi Valley. Terry collaborated with photographer Kirstie Lambert, who lives part time in Ventura, CA and part time in Idaho, where she documents contemporary ranching life.

“When I first saw Kirstie’s photographs, I was just taken aback by how she saw the world. Her images looked as if I had special ordered them for my purpose. Throughout my career as a watercolorist, though the subject matter has changed, I always sought to create a sense of space and light, of how we see, for the viewer. My works are not duplicates of the photographs, as the camera can see every aspect of the world with the same resolution. A camera can give you a better sense of vision with a short focal length, but it still only looks at the world with one eye. Humans have two eyes and have binocular vision. This gives us a world in three dimensions, that sense of space. Our eyes don’t take a snapshot of the scene and send it to the brain for processing, rather we focus for two to three seconds on the things that most attract us while the rest of the scene is blurry. In simplistic terms, the brain stitches those images together to help us navigate our world. In my paintings, I focus on some aspects in detail and blur out other areas on purpose. I hope this gives the viewer that sense that you are standing there looking, as if you were there.”

This exhibit showcases several pieces from Cal Lutheran’s American West Art Collection, including recent acquisitions.

On view through Apr. 8, 2022.

California Lutheran University has several robust art collections, including one dedicated to the portrayal of the American West and related themes. American Western Art is an area often underappreciated in art circles as kitsch or lowbrow, despite the obvious talent of its artists and its immeasurable influence on popular culture and America’s perception of itself. The genre has a special place in Ventura County, where our landscapes were used as the backdrop in thousands of film and television Westerns filmed right here in Simi Valley at the Corriganville Movie Ranch.

This exhibit showcases several pieces from Cal Lutheran’s collection, including recent acquisitions. The works in concert beg questions of its audience, such as how masculinity is communicated, conceptualizing the portrayal of Native American peoples versus individual portraits, and considering who creates the narrative in a genre that is dominated by Euro-American men, as this exhibit demonstrates. The works, or horses, have not changed color, but we interrogate them differently to understand our relationship with them, sometimes finding that their meanings for us have shifted over time.

Artists include Roy Anderson, Dick Bacon, Clifford Beck, István Benyovszky, Kent Butler, W.H. Ford, Martin Grelle, Sherry Gribben, David Halbach, R.A. Heichberger, Wayne Justus, Roy Kerswill, Jan Kunz, Thomas W. Lorimer, Albert Micale, Rusty Phelps, Donald Putman, Alfredo Rodriguez, Robert Shufelt, Oleg Stavrowsky, Lyle Tayson Sr., and Clark True.

This exhibit was made possible by the generous donations of the Bob Eubanks Family, Lou and Evelyn Grubb, Sarah W. Heath, and William Rolland.
