In Garment Girl, we learn about the harmful effects of fast fashion. Whether it’s the tireless labor of women in developing nations to sew the garments, the chemicals used the dye the fabric, or the water used to grow the cotton (713 gallons per t-shirt, or approximately as much water as a person would drink for two and half years, according to HuffPost).
Reduce your clothing footprint by extending the life of your discarded clothing and acquiring cool new threads, for free! Garment Girl is extended slightly to host a county-wide clothing swap. In a clothing swap, bring in your lightly used clothes and search out articles of clothing you’d like from our selection. You can bring in as much or as little (or no) clothing as you’d like and take as many pieces as you’d like. Please only bring in clothing that still has life in it. Left over clothing will remain in the gallery until Mar. 5 when it will be donated.
This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the in front of the gallery or in the lot on the southwest corner of Olsen Road and Mt. Clef Blvd. Clothing categories include those for women, men, and children.
The Garment Girl swap furthers the narrative of “Remake,” a collaboration Vanderpool organized with Hà Nội based artist and fashion designer Phạm Hồng. The artists arranged a ‘factory’ in the gallery mimicking Vietnamese sweatshop which are often located in residential homes. They invited Hà Nội garment and apparel industry workers to collaborate with them to create new clothes from recycled garments. The swap at CLU engages the idea of recycling clothing through trade in our community. As Phạm Hồng shares in the Garment Worker video on display in the exhibition, we should think about the efforts of workers who designed and manufactured the clothes we wear as well as the greater social and environmental impact of the global supply chain and our responsibility as consumers.
